DOT Physical FAQ – Lake Charles, LA

  • Most DOT medical certificates are valid for up to 2 years.

However, if you have certain medical conditions (like high blood pressure, diabetes, or sleep apnea), the examiner may issue a shorter certification period (such as 1 year, 6 months, or 3 months) to monitor your health more closely.

Your expiration date will be clearly listed on your DOT medical card.

  • High blood pressure doesn’t automatically mean you’ll fail your DOT physical.

Your examiner will discuss your specific readings and options with you during your visit.

  • Yes — you can and should wear your corrective lenses during the vision portion of the DOT physical.

The FMCSA requires drivers to have at least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without correction. If you do not meet these standards in one eye, you may still qualify to drive under the FMCSA Vision Evaluation Program.

    This process requires:

    • An eye evaluation completed by a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist using Form MCSA-5871 (Vision Evaluation Report), and

    • A review by the Certified Medical Examiner (Dr. Savoie) during your DOT physical.

Drivers who qualify through this program may still be issued a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, typically valid for up to 12 months.

Be sure to bring your glasses or contacts to your appointment.

  • A typical DOT physical exam takes about 30–45 minutes. This is highly dependent on the individual and their medical conditions.

This includes filling out any forms, completing the exam, and performing the required vision, hearing, and urine tests.

You’ll receive your DOT medical card the same day upon successful completion of the exam.

  • If you don’t meet the FMCSA requirements during your exam, you’ll be given information on what needs to be corrected (for example, blood pressure management or documentation from your specialist).

Once you address the issue, you can return for reevaluation.

Our goal is to help you meet federal standards safely and get you back on the road.

  • Yes. If you meet the medical requirements, you’ll receive your DOT medical certificate (medical card) immediately after your exam.

You’ll also receive a copy for your records, and we’ll provide guidance on submitting it to your employer or the Louisiana DMV if needed.

  • Yes — a simple urine test is part of every DOT physical.

This test screens for underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney issues.

It is not a drug test. If your employer also requires drug testing, that will be a separate process.
